Interfaces in metal matrix composites

Examples of interfaces in metal matrix composites (MMC) are presented in this paper; in particular, Al alloys reinforced with B4C or SiC particles; pure Al reinforced with melt-spun intermetallic ribbons (Ni3Al); Mg alloys reinforced with C long fibers; Ti alloys reinforced with double coated (C/TiB2) SiC fibers. Kinetic studies of artificial aging on Al 6061/SiCp and Al 6061/SiCw composites are also presented. Several analytical techniques have been used for these studies: a good knowledge of the interfaces in MMC is fundamental for the design of these materials.

Control of emissions from diesel engine vehicles

The proposed materials and the production process for particulate traps, used in order to reduce the diesel engine emissions, are reviewed. The filter regeneration principles are discussed. An overview is given on the use of catalysts for the NOx reduction or for particulate oxidation in diesel exhaust gas.

Interfacial reaction in AZ61/AZ91/P100 Mg/graphite composite: an Auger spectroscopy investigation

The influence of isothermal treatment at 400°C on the microstructure of a magnesium alloy/graphite composite was studied. The composite was characterized by Auger electron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction. Due to thermal treatment, the reaction zone containing carbides grows.

Thermal stability of Cu-K-V catalyst for diesel soot combustion

This paper reports a study on the thermal stability of a Cu-K-V catalyst, which showed particular promise for low temperature combustion of diesel particulate. Prolonged treatments were performed at high temperatures (400-1000°C) for periods up to 15 days under different gaseous atmospheres.

The effect of mechanical recycling on the microstructure and properties of PA66 composites reinforced with carbon fibers

This article aims to prepare by injection molding recycled polymeric composites based on PA66 reinforced with short carbon fibers after artificial aging for applications in the automotive field. The aging cycles involves the combined action of UV radiation, moisture, and temperature in order to simulate the common outdoor conditions. The 100% recycled composites are obtained by the regranulation of the aged specimens followed by the remelting and re-injection molding.

Steps 2

Steps

STEPS is a Piemonte regional research project, it is the acronym of Sistemi e Tecnologie per l’EsPlorazione Spaziale (Systems and Tecnlogies for the Space Exploration).

STEPS has been a very large R&D project (about 20 MEuro) whose leader was Thales Alenia Space. Other partners are part of the project: among them the Politecnico of Turin, the University of Turin, the University of Eastern Piedmont, ALTEC and other qualified SMEs.
